How to Wear a Midi Skirt: Hem at the Narrowest, Shoe on Purpose
Midi means mid-calf, not a random length that chops the leg. Hem it to the narrow part of the calf, then pick a shoe that continues the line or breaks it on purpose.

The hem is the design
Mid-calf that lands on the widest part of the leg is the unflattering length everyone remembers. Move it an inch or two. Sit in it. Walk. A kick pleat or a slit is how you take a train in a column midi. Without one, it is a hobble.
Volume on one half
Full skirt, fitted top. Slim knit skirt, a bit of volume or a blazer on top. Full on full is a sofa. A belt only if the skirt has a waist to belt; elastic tubes do not.
Shoes that finish the line
A pointed flat or a low block heel lengthens a slim midi. A chunky trainer can work with a sportier midi and an ankle that shows. A delicate sandal under a heavy wool midi looks like two outfits. Boots: a knee boot under a midi is a 1970s trick that still works if there is a sliver of leg or a slit; a mid-calf boot that hits at the same place as the hem is a fight.
Questions, answered
- Can I wear a midi to work?
- In a opaque cloth, with a tucked shirt and a closed shoe, yes. A bias satin midi is evening unless the office is that office.
- What underwear?
- Seamless, matched to the cloth, and a slip if the skirt is pale or static. You will find this out in daylight, not in the shop.
- Midi over trousers?
- A look with a point. If you cannot name the point, it is extra cloth. Skip it for a capsule.
