Cloth that sheds versus cloth that soaks
Classic trench cloth is cotton gabardine, tightly woven, often with a water-repellent finish. That handles a city shower. Uncoated fashion cotton, viscose blends, and 'trench-look' polyester with open weaves will darken and sag in twenty minutes. If the hanger tag does not mention water, believe the omission.
How you wear it in weather
Collar up in wind. Belt tied, not the hanging belt ends slapping the wet cloth. Storm flap actually buttoned if it has one. A backpack under a trench lifts the hem and pours water onto your seat — use a shoulder bag or a tote you can cover. Length: midi covers more thigh; a short trench is a jacket and will wet your skirt.
After the rain
Hang it on a wide hanger, unbelted, away from a radiator that will bake a shoulder shiny. Brush mud when dry. Re-proof with a spray once a season if you actually use it as rain kit. A trench that only travels between a dry car and a dry office is a silhouette, and that is allowed — just do not take it on a walking holiday and blame Burberry.
