Metal that lasts

Huggie vs Hoop Earrings: Which to Wear Daily

A huggie is a small hinged hoop that clicks against the lobe. A hoop swings. One is sleep-and-gym jewelry. The other is a silhouette.

Huggie vs Hoop Earrings: Which to Wear Daily — still life for this Jewelry guide on Nonchallant

The hinge is the product

Huggies work because a spring hinge and a notch click the hoop shut against the lobe. There is no butterfly back to lose. When the click is vague, the earring is a $14 costume hinge, not a 2 mm gold tool. Open and close it ten times in the shop. If it feels sandy, walk.

Classic wire hoops thread through the hole and latch on the other side of the wire. They swing. They catch hair. They look like hoops. A latch that is a thin 0.6 mm wire will oval. Look for a 1.5 mm+ latch or a built hinge on anything over 20 mm. For millimetres, use the hoop size guide rather than “medium.”

Sleep, gym, office

Sleep: huggies, 8–12 mm, smooth outer, no dangling charm. Gym: same, or a 6 mm titanium stud if you box. Office: 12–15 mm huggie or hoop, not 50 mm. A 25 mm hoop with a silk blouse is a snag report waiting for a $40 repair that cannot fix a pulled thread.

Metal and the “second hole” problem

First holes take a 0.8–1.0 mm post or a hoop wire of similar gauge. Second holes are often smaller and closer to the edge; a chunky 3 mm huggie will not sit. Buy a 8 mm slim huggie for hole two, not a matched 15 mm pair forced backward. If cheap steel itches, the hinge metal is the allergen — switch the daily pair to 14k, niobium, or titanium, not “hypoallergenic” as a font choice.

Questions, answered

Are huggies just small hoops?
Functionally, a subset: small, hinged, tight to the lobe. A 40 mm hinged hoop is not a huggie even if the hinge is the same idea.
Can huggies stretch my piercing?
A 3 mm-thick 12 mm huggie is heavy for a fresh hole. Wait until the piercing is mature (often 3–6 months for a lobe), then start thin.
Why does one huggie sit lower?
Asymmetric holes, or a hinge that is already bent. Do not yank it “even.” A jeweler can retension a 14k hinge; a $12 plate gets replaced.
