A hybrid is pocket coils plus at least a couple of inches of real comfort foam or latex. An innerspring with a thin quilt is a cheaper, bouncier, hotter-edged bed.

The comfort layer is the hybrid
Coils hold you up. Foam or latex is what your shoulder hits. A hybrid that earns the word has a 2-inch-plus comfort stack — memory foam, polyfoam in the 1.8 lb+ band, or latex — over individually wrapped coils. Under that, you have an innerspring with marketing.
All-foam beds are a different argument; start with memory foam versus latex if you do not want springs at all.
Pocket coils versus the old grid
Pocket (Marshall) coils sit in fabric sleeves so your hip can sink without dragging the whole surface. Bonnell and offset grids share a wire; they feel bouncier and transfer more motion. 800–1,200 pocket coils in a queen is a normal spec. Coil gauge in the 12–15 band is typical; lower gauge is thicker wire.

Who should not pay for hybrid
Stomach sleepers who like a hard hotel bed can skip the foam stack. Guest rooms can too. Side sleepers with shoulder pain should not buy a $450 innerspring and hope a topper fixes geometry. Pay for the comfort layer once.

- A medium-firm hybrid with zoned coils helps some people. “Hybrid” is not a medical device. If pain is the reason, try the bed for the full trial, not a 10-minute showroom lie-down.
- How long do the coils last versus foam?
- Pocket coils often outlast cheap comfort foam. The bed feels tired when the foam dies, not when the springs snap.
- Do I need a box spring under a hybrid?
- A solid or closely slatted foundation. Many hybrids void the warranty on an old flexy box spring.
