Hypoallergenic is a marketing adjective with no legal millimetre or nickel number. The metals that usually behave are titanium, niobium, and nickel-free yellow 14k.

Nickel is the usual culprit, not “cheap metal” as a vibe
Contact dermatitis from earrings is often nickel ions in sweat. 316L stainless, white-gold alloys, and many “surgical” butterfly backs leach enough to rash a pierced lobe in hours to days. Yellow 14k with no nickel, titanium, and niobium do not play that game. Green marks without itch are copper, a different problem.
Coatings fail. A 0.5 micron “gold dipped” steel post is a nickel delivery system once the gold splits at the hole. If it itched in week three, the coat is gone. Replace the post metal, not the soap.
A short list of posts that usually work
Titanium (grade 2 or 23) and niobium: body-jewelry defaults, 18–20 gauge (1.0–0.8 mm). 14k or 18k yellow: jewelry default, confirm nickel-free if you are reactive. Platinum: works, expensive for a 4 mm stud. Plastic: emergency only, they harbor gunk. What to do with a jewelry box that already itches
A jeweler can swap posts on a 14k charm for $30–$70. They cannot honestly “make steel hypoallergenic.” Sleep in the titanium pair. Wear the pretty pair for three dry hours. If a $12 hoop is the only thing you miss, it was never worth the rash.

- Yellow 14k usually behaves. White 14k often contains nickel. The karat number is purity of gold, not a nickel rating.
- Are plastic earrings safer?
- They avoid nickel. They also crack, hold bacteria in scratches, and look like retainers. Use them to keep a hole open, not as a wardrobe.
- Can I coat posts with nail polish?
- It lasts 10–14 days and peels inside the hole, which is unpleasant. Fine as a weekend patch on a costume pair. Not a plan.
