Is Italian Leather a Real Grade?
Italy is a tanning country, not a hide grade. “Italian leather” on a $49 bag is a postcard. Ask for full-grain or top-grain and a tannery.

Geography is not a millimetre of fibre
Full-grain, top-grain, corrected, split, bonded: those words describe which layer of the hide and what the factory did to the surface. “Italian,” “French,” “English bridle” can describe a tradition and a tannery. Only bridle, in honest use, implies a specific veg-tan construction. Italian does not imply full-grain.
When Italy is a real signal
A maker who names the tannery (Badalassi, Conceria, a specific Arzignano house), the tannage (veg, chrome), and the grade is using Italy as an address. A marketplace listing that repeats Italian four times and genuine twice is using it as perfume. Price still talks: full-grain small goods $80–$200; bags $300+.

What to print on the receipt you keep
Grade, tannage, thickness (mm), and who tanned it. If the seller cannot say, you are buying a look. Vegetable tan from anywhere will patina. Chrome-tan top-grain from Italy will be stable and fine. The passport stamp will not recraft a peeling coating.

- Some of the world’s best tanneries are there. So are finishing plants for cheap splits. The tannery name is the filter, not the country.

- That is assembly. The hide could be tanned elsewhere. Still ask grade.

- Two traditions of vegetable tannage. Both can be excellent full-grain. Neither is a synonym for the other.
