Is Merino Worth the Price of a $90 T-Shirt?

Merino is worth $70–$120 when you wear it more than once between washes. It is not worth $200 as a logo cotton replacement you treat like a Hanes.

Is Merino Worth the Price of a $90 T-Shirt? — still life for this Smart buying guide on Nonchallant

You are paying for odor and repeat wear

Merino’s crimp and lanolin-adjacent chemistry hold less smell than cotton after a day on public transport. That is why a $90 tee that does three travel days beats three $12 cotton tees in a 35L pack. Microns: 17–19 next to skin, 20–22 in a crew you wear over a shirt. 150–200 GSM is the tee/base. 250–320 GSM is a sweater.

When $90 is a bad purchase

Office tees you bleach. Hard gym sessions you wash daily anyway. A merino hoodie you dry on hot. Thin 130 GSM merino that holes at a backpack strap in a month. Those jobs belong to cotton, a synthetic gym shirt, or a heavier merino.

Care is part of the price

Wool cycle or hand wash, no softener, no high heat. A $90 tee washed like a gym cotton is a $90 felted rag. Hang or lay flat. Moths eat it because it is keratin — store clean. If that ritual sounds like a second job, buy cotton and a laundry day.

Questions, answered

Will merino itch?
17–19 micron next-to-skin usually does not. Cheap 23+ micron “wool t-shirts” might. If you hate all wool, merino will not convert you.
How many wears between washes?
Two to four for a commute tee if you air it. After a hot gym session, wash it. Merino is not a hygiene exemption.
Merino or cashmere for the office?
Merino for the layer against skin. Cashmere for the sweater that rarely sees a backpack.
