Kitten Heel vs Block Heel: Which One You Can Actually Walk In
A kitten heel is a short spike. A block heel is a short column. Comfort is the diameter, not the height on the box.

Diameter is the comfort chart
A kitten heel is typically 25–50mm high and 8–12mm wide at the tip. It looks refined. It also finds every grate. A block heel of the same height has a 20–40mm platform of rubber or stacked leather under the heel bone. That is why a 45mm block can feel lower than a 35mm kitten.
If you cannot walk a city block in the pair at home, you will not walk a ceremony-plus-reception in them. There is no wedding that changes physics.
| Heel | Use | Skip |
|---|---|---|
| Block 30–50mm, rubber top-piece | Weddings, offices, cobbles, dancing | A painted-on 100mm block that is still a platform |
| Kitten 25–45mm, slim tip | Seated dinners, offices with even floors, photos | Grass, gravel, subway, a vineyard |
| Stiletto 70mm+ | Car-to-table, if you already live in them | Any day you will stand in a receiving line |
| Wedge / stacked wood | Garden if the sole is real | Wet grass and a cheap cork that shears |
When the kitten is the right shoe
A leather kitten with a covered toe and a steel rod, broken in, is a good office shoe and a good dinner shoe. It takes less visual space under a slim trouser than a chunky block. If your wardrobe is sharp and your commute is a lift, the kitten earns a place.
If your weekend includes a winery or a lawn, the kitten stays home. That is not an aesthetic opinion.
One pair for a wedding season
If you buy one dressed shoe this year, make it a block heel in black or dark brown leather, 40mm, combination sole, $120–$250. It will do more invitations than a kitten and a stiletto combined. Pair it with the guest capsule, not with a new shoe per RSVP.
Have a cobbler add a rubber top-piece on day one, $10–$20. That single visit is the comfort upgrade brands skip so the shoe looks like a drawing.
Questions, answered
- Are kitten heels coming back, so should I buy them?
- They never left offices. Buy a pair if you walk in them. Do not buy them because a lookbook put them on grass.
- Can a block heel look elegant?
- A slim block in polished leather, 40mm, under a midi, is elegant. A chunky 1990s square on a dress that wanted a spike is a different sentence.
- What about kitten heels and wide feet?
- The slim heel does not make the toe box wider. Fit the last first. A too-narrow kitten is a blister machine regardless of height.
