Layering for Spring: Three Thin Layers, Not a Winter Coat in April

Spring is 8°C at 8am and 18°C at 2pm. The coat that saved January is a commute you will carry. Thin layers you can shed are the whole trick.

Layering for Spring: Three Thin Layers, Not a Winter Coat in April — still life for this Wardrobe guide on Nonchallant

Finished at every stage

If you peel the coat and look like you forgot your clothes, the middle layer is wrong. A shirt that can go solo, a knit that can go solo, a jacket that can go over either. That three-piece set covers a month of unstable weather.

Avoid a bulky knit that only works under a coat. You will overheat at the first indoor coffee and have nowhere to put 2kg of wool.

Rain is the spring weather

A trench or a packed shell in the bag beats a fashion coat that spots. Waterproof-enough for a city shower, breathable enough that you do not stew. If your spring is still snow, you do not have spring yet — wear the winter coat and wait.

Colour stays the winter story

Do not buy a pastel wardrobe in March that fights your navy trousers. One lighter knit in the existing palette is a season. Seven floral blouses are a garage sale in June.

Questions, answered

Is a leather jacket a spring layer?
Yes if it is unlined enough to wear at 15°C and you have rain cover. No if it is a stiff winter motorcycle jacket.
Tights or bare legs in April?
Match the morning, not the forecast high. Tights you can take off are a layer. A skirt with no plan is a bet on noon.
Can I keep wearing the puffer?
On the first cold week, yes. Once the trees have leaves, the puffer is a signal you have not opened the closet. Switch to the lighter coat.
