Mattress Protector vs Topper: Which One You Need
A protector is a 0.5–3 cm hygiene layer. A topper is a 5–10 cm comfort layer. One keeps the warranty. The other changes the feel. They are not synonyms.

Protector: the cheap insurance
Sweat is 0.5–1 litre a night in a warm room. Without a protector it lands in foam you cannot wash. A good protector is a fitted sheet with a membrane: polyurethane or TPU, not crackly PVC if you can hear it from the door. Skirt depth must exceed mattress height — a 25 cm mattress needs a 30–35 cm pocket, a 30 cm pillow-top needs 40 cm.
Waterproof versus water-resistant: waterproof for kids, pets, and the only mattress you own. Water-resistant (cotton terry, no membrane) for a guest room you trust. Wash monthly. Skip dry-clean-only membranes.
| Protector | Topper | |
|---|---|---|
| Thickness | 0.5–3 cm | 5–10 cm |
| Job | Fluid, dust, warranty | Feel, pressure relief |
| Wash | Monthly, 40–60C | Cover if it has one; foam rarely |
| On a sagging mattress | Still yes | No — replace the mattress |
| Price, queen | $40–$90 | $80–$250 |
Topper: a firmness edit, not a new mattress
5 cm of 50–60 kg/m³ foam or a 5 cm latex sheet will take the edge off a 7/10 mattress. 8 cm starts to hide a 8/10. Nothing in topper form restores a 4 cm sag. If you need that, you need a mattress. Put the protector on the mattress, then the topper, then a second cheap protector or the topper’s own cover if you spill.
Sheets have to get bigger
A 25 cm mattress plus 8 cm topper is 33 cm of height. Fitted sheets labelled “fits 30 cm” will ping off — the slipping-sheet problem. Buy 40 cm pocket sheets or a deep-fitted designed for toppers. Percale at 300–400 still applies; the pocket is the new spec.
Questions, answered
- Will a protector make me hotter?
- Cheap vinyl yes. A cotton-faced TPU protector is a fraction of a tog. If you wake wet, look at room temperature and duvet tog before you bin a $60 protector.
- Can I use only a topper as a protector?
- No. Foam toppers drink spills. They are not waterproof.
- Do hotels use both?
- They use a waterproof protector, always. Toppers are a brand decision. You are not a hotel; buy the protector.
