Microfiber vs Cotton Towels: Fast Dry versus Real Pile
Microfiber dries fast and pills into a sour cloth. Cotton at 400–600 GSM is the bath towel. Use microfiber in a gym bag, not on a bathroom bar.

Split polyester is not a looped pile
Microfiber is extruded polyester (often with nylon) split into fine filaments. Capillary action is excellent. Hand is slick, not plush. Cotton terry is looped yarn on a ground cloth; 400–600 GSM of long-staple cotton is a pile you still have in year five. Comparing them only on “dries fast” misses that one is a towel and one is a chamois.
Where each belongs
Gym bag, camping, a camera lens, a wet car: microfiber. Daily bath, guest bath, face: cotton. A “travel towel” 60 × 120 cm in microfiber at $12–$25 is honest. A $25 “luxury microfiber bath sheet” is a gym towel with a lifestyle photo.

Washing is different chemistry
Never put fabric softener on either. Softener kills cotton absorbency and coats microfiber so it stops grabbing. Wash microfiber with microfiber, no cotton lint. Hot-adjacent cotton. If a microfiber towel smells after a clean wash, it is done — the filaments are a biology experiment.

- Are microfiber towels more hygienic?
- They dry faster, which helps. They also hold odor in the filaments. Hygiene is wash and dry, not fibre branding.
- Can I use a car microfiber on my face?
- Buy a towel sold for skin. Detailing cloths can carry polish residue. Cheap ones also shed.
- Linen versus microfiber for travel?
- A thin linen towel is nicer on skin and still packs smaller than cotton terry. Microfiber still wins the stuff-sack contest.
