Nylon vs Polyester Travel Clothes: What to Pack
Both are plastic. Nylon is tougher and often quieter. Polyester dries faster and takes print. Merino still wins the dinner if you pack one.

Two synthetics, two jobs
Polyester is the travel-brand default: cheap, colourfast, quick-dry, can feel like a bag if the knit is cheap. Nylon (and nylon-elastane wovens) is what decent travel trousers are made of: more abrasion resistance, often a duller, less plasticky hand. Ripstop nylon jackets pack small and survive a bag drop.
A 100% poly woven shirt in a hot meeting will shine and smell. A poly knit tee will survive the sink. Know the construction, not just the fibre word on a hangtag.

Smell, sun, and the sink
Polyester loves odor molecules. A poly tee on day three of a humid city is a roommate. Wash it. Nylon is a little better, not magic. Merino is the fiber that lets you skip a day. Sun will fade both synthetics; it will also dry them on a hotel hanger in an hour, which is the point.
A capsule that is all plastic looks like all plastic in photographs. Mix one natural fibre so you have a meal outfit. The rest of the packing logic is the travel capsule and ten days in a carry-on.
What not to buy because it says “travel”
A $180 poly “travel blazer” that shines under office lights is still a shiny blazer. A nylon cargo with nine flaps is a costume unless you actually need the flaps. UPF ratings are real if the weave is dense; they are not a reason to wear a plastic hoodie to dinner.
If you only buy one synthetic pair of trousers, nylon-stretch, mid grey or navy, $60–$140, that can dry overnight and not look like gym kit from two metres. That pair earns the packing cube.
Questions, answered
- Is recycled polyester better?
- Better as waste management, not as odor. It still smells like polyester on day two. Wash it.
- Can I iron nylon?
- Low heat, or hang in a steamy bathroom. A hot iron will glaze it. If it needs a hard press, you packed the wrong cloth.
- What about wool-blend travel knits?
- A merino or wool-nylon knit is often the best of the dinner problem. It is not as fast-dry as poly. Pack one.
