Opal Care Guide: Water, Ultrasonic, and the 6 Mohs Problem
Precious opal is 5–6.5 Mohs and holds water in its silica. No ultrasonic, no steam, no two-hour hot shower, no dry desert safe for a decade. Doublets hate water because of glue.

Solid, doublet, triplet — three different objects
Solid: one piece of opal, often 2–4 mm thick in a bezel. Doublet: a thin opal slice glued to a dark backing. Triplet: a thin slice plus a quartz or plastic cap, glue in two planes. Water is a mild nuisance for solids and a divorce lawyer for glue. If the price is $45 for a 12 mm “opal,” assume triplet.
Play-of-color is diffraction, not a coating, on real precious opal. Dyed or simulated opal in resin is a different product. Ask.
Water, heat, and the crack you cannot polish out
Opal can craze (fine cracks) from sudden heat or from drying in a 0% humidity box. The old advice to store opals in a glass of water is overkill for a solid you wear; a pouch in a normal closet is enough. Do not leave a doublet in the shower. Do not put any opal in an ultrasonic next to a 14k band — the same appointment that is safe for the gold is how the stone dies. Clean gold settings with a damp cloth around the stone, not a 10-minute soap soak like turquoise, which is also porous and also hates chemicals.

Setting and insurance
A low 14k or silver bezel around an 8×6 mm cab is the adult setting. Prongs on a 2 mm-thick opal are how corners chip. Insure a $400 solid. Do not insure a $40 triplet as if it were Lightning Ridge royalty. When a solid dries and crazes, a jeweler can sometimes recut; budget like a new stone, $80–$250, not like a polish.
Questions, answered
- Can I wear an opal ring every day?
- A bezel-set solid, with the same care as a pearl — last on, first off for chores — can be a daily ring. It will not survive a granite kitchen the way a 2 mm 14k band will.
- Do opals need to be soaked once a month?
- A solid worn normally does not. A drawer-queen in a desert safe might appreciate a slightly humid pouch, not a week in a glass.
- Why did the color go milky?
- Surface scratches on a triplet cap, glue haze, or dehydration crazing. A loupe tells which. Do not toothpaste it.
