Real pearls are nacre. Fake pearls are glass, plastic, or shell beads with paint. Freshwater 6–7 mm strands at $80–$250 are real and modest. A $29 “South Sea” is glass.

Real is a farm, fake is a factory
Freshwater pearls are real mollusks, often nucleated in tissue, slightly off-round, $80–$250 for a wearable 6–7 mm 18 inch. Akoya are saltwater, usually rounder, thinner nacre than South Sea, more expensive. Tahitian and South Sea are the large ones (9–15 mm) and are not $29.
Mall “pearl” studs at $18 are usually glass or plastic with a 0.1 mm coating. Majorca-style fakes can be well made and still fake. That is allowed if the seller says so. It is a scam if they say South Sea.
What you are paying for when it is real
Nacre thickness, surface, shape, matching, and the 14k or gilt posts. A $120 freshwater strand on a $8 plated clasp is real pearls on a weak door. Spend $40 extra on a 14k clasp. Care in one paragraph because pearls are organic
Last on, first off. No ultrasonic, no steam, no silver dip, no perfume. Wipe with a soft cloth. Restring every 1–3 years of wear when knots sit against 6 mm pearls ($40–$90). Store in a pouch, not a sealed dry safe next to silica for a decade — nacre likes a little normal humidity, not a desert and not a bathroom sauna.
Questions, answered
- Are freshwater pearls fake because they are cheap?
- No. They are real nacre, usually less round and less expensive than akoya. Cheap-and-fake is glass. Cheap-and-real is freshwater.
- Is a pearl necklace formal only?
- A 6 mm freshwater 18 inch is a collarbone chain that happens to be organic. Wear it with a crew neck. Save the 12 mm South Sea for the room that earned it.
- Can pearls be gold-filled?
- The clasp and chain can. The pearls cannot. A filled 1.5 mm chain with two 6 mm freshwater drops is a good everyday hybrid.
