White gold is not a naturally white metal
Unplated “white” 14k still reads as dirty champagne in daylight. Rhodium, a platinum-group metal, is bright, hard, and expensive per gram — which is why the layer is a micron, not a sheet. 18k white (75% gold) is usually nickel-lighter and a bit creamier under the plate than 14k white.
Nickel in some 14k white alloys is the itch people blame on “gold allergy.” If a white-gold hoop rashes you, the plate has worn and nickel is reaching skin. Switch to yellow 14k, palladium white, or platinum — not another $40 rhodium dip as a medical plan.
The maintenance calendar
A wedding band that hits a desk 250 days a year needs rhodium every 12–18 months. A pendant that sits still can go 3–5 years. Prongs wear fastest; a yellow claw on a white head is the tell. Budget $50–$120 and a 3–7 day shop visit. Compare that to platinum, which needs no rhodium and instead develops a gray patina you can leave or polish.

Buying white gold without the surprise
Ask whether the quote includes the first rhodium. Ask whether the alloy is nickel-white or palladium-white. If the salesperson says “white gold stays white,” they are selling the plate as the metal. For a ring you will still have at 60, platinum or yellow 14k is the lower-maintenance adult.

- Does rhodium plating chip?
