Signet Ring: Which Finger, What Face Size

Finger jobs, not secret codes
Pinky: old default in UK and US family jewelry, leaves the ring finger free, a 8–12 mm oval face looks proportional. Ring finger: reads as “I wear a ring here,” which is either a wedding stand-in or a confusion. Index: a 12–16 mm face, more visible when you point, more likely to hit a door frame. Middle: possible, often bulky next to other rings.
Left versus right is family, handedness, and whether you write with that pinky on paper. A 10 mm signet on the writing pinky will polish on the face in a year of desks. That is patina, not ruin.
Face millimetres and the rest of the stack
Oval 10×8 mm is a classic pinky. Round 12–14 mm is a modern index. A 18 mm face is a statement that needs a 4–6 mm shank or it will see-saw. Do not stack three bands under a 14 mm signet on the same finger unless you like a knuckle that cannot type. One slim 1.5 mm band next to a pinky signet is enough.

Engraving, gold-filled, and when not to bother
Size, wear for two weeks, then engrave. A $40–$120 hand-cut monogram on a 10 mm face is the point of a signet; a laser scribble on a $55 plated oval is a costume. Gold-filled signets work if the face is not going to be recut — cutting through the sheet exposes brass. Solid 14k for anything you will still have when the initials mean something.

- Is a pinky signet only for men?
- No. A 8–10 mm oval on a woman’s pinky is a classic. A 16 mm index signet is unisex and louder.
- Can I wear signets on both hands?
- One signet is a piece. Two is a look. Four is a collection you should not wear at once.

- A light inner dome helps a 10 mm pinky ring over a knuckle. A deep comfort fit on a 4 mm-wide signet shank can make it spin. Try both.
