What you are actually buying
Solid gold is an alloy. 14k is 58.3% gold; 18k is 75%; 10k is the US legal floor at 41.7%. The rest is copper, silver, zinc, or nickel. There is no core waiting to show. A 18 inch 1.5 mm solid 14k cable usually runs $350–$650 at melt-plus-labor, not $29.
Gold-filled is a mechanical bond of a gold sheet onto brass, stamped 12/20 GF or 14/20 GF. Vermeil is electroplated gold, 2.5 microns minimum, over 925 silver. Plate is the same process with no useful legal minimum — 0.17 micron is a common fashion coat. That is why filled versus plated is the first filter, not the color of the listing photo.
How each finish fails
Solid gold dulls from lotion and scratches; it does not go brassy. Filled wears through at high points after years — the inside of a ring, a clasp lip. Vermeil wears to silver, then the silver tarnishes. Plate goes brassy in 4–12 weeks of daily sweat.

A buying order that does not waste money
Spend solid-gold money on the two pieces that rub: a 2 mm band and 12–15 mm hoops. Buy the 16–18 inch chain in 14/20 gold-filled until you are sure of the length. Skip “18k gold plated” at $22. If the stamp says GP, HGE, or nothing, it is plate.
Questions, answered
- Is gold-filled real gold?
- The outer layer is real gold of the stated karat, in a legally defined quantity. The core is brass. It is not a solid 14k alloy.
- Is vermeil better than gold-filled?
- For earrings that sit still, vermeil is nicer because the core is silver. For a ring or a chain that rubs, filled lasts longer because 5% by weight beats 2.5 microns.
- Can I tell them apart from a photo?
- No. Demand the stamp, the karat, and either microns or the 1/20 weight. A $29 “14k” tennis bracelet is plate with a prop stamp.
