Surgical Steel vs Titanium Earrings
316L steel is cheap, hard, and nickel-bearing. Titanium is lighter, nickel-free, and the actual piercing-studio default. “Surgical” is not a purity grade.

What “surgical steel” is allowed to mean
In jewelry, “surgical” usually points at 316L (sometimes 316LVM). That alloy is used in some medical hardware. It is not nickel-free. Sweat plus a 0.8 mm post is a good extraction setup for nickel ions. Many people never notice. The ones who do notice should not be told to “get used to it.”
Titanium in piercing shops is often ASTM F136 (grade 23) or F67 (commercially pure). Ask for the grade, not the vibe. “Titanium plated” steel is steel. “Titanium colored” is often PVD on steel. The word has to be the metal, through the post.
Wear, color, and the $20 test
Steel wins on price and on a 4 mm hoop that might go through a gym bag. Titanium wins on weight, nickel, and healing a new hole. Anodized blues and purples on titanium are oxide thickness, not a 0.5 micron fashion plate; they can scuff at the click. Gold-anodized steel is plate and will wear to silver-gray. If you want gold color without nickel, buy 14k or gold-filled, not a $9 “gold surgical” hoop. For the broader allergy map, hypoallergenic is not a spec.

When steel is the right, boring answer
Unreactive lobes, a 10 mm sleep hoop you will destroy at the gym, a travel pair you will not mourn at $12. Keep them out of the salt-and-bleach combo that pits even 316L over years. When a steel butterfly back is the only thing that itches on a gold stud, replace the back first — $6 in titanium clutches — before you retire the stud.

- Is implant-grade titanium worth it over “titanium”?
- For a healed lobe, grade 2 is usually enough. For a fresh piercing, buy the shop’s implant-grade and do not swap to a mystery hoop at week two.
- Will titanium earrings look cheap?
- Polished 10 mm titanium looks like quiet metal. Candy anodize looks like body jewelry. Choose the finish for the rest of the outfit, not the other way around.
- Can I solder titanium to gold?
- Not as a kitchen job. Mixed-metal earrings are a jeweler with the right process, or a titanium post mechanically set into a gold charm.
