Tencel vs Cotton Sheets: Cooler or Just Smoother?
Tencel lyocell is smoother and drinks more moisture than cotton. It is not automatically cooler than a 300-count percale, and it is not a 1,200TC miracle.

Lyocell is a fibre, percale is a weave
Tencel is Lenzing’s lyocell brand: wood pulp dissolved and spun into a smooth filament. It takes dye well, wicks more moisture than cotton by weight, and feels closer to dry silk than to a hotel sheet. Cotton percale is a 1/1 grid of spun staple. That grid is why percale sleeps crisp and why Tencel never quite will.
If you already know you want drape, compare Tencel to cotton sateen, not to percale. The weave comparison that actually matters on cotton is percale versus sateen.
Heat, hand, and the honest price
Tencel sleeps smooth and a little cool on first contact, then can feel clammy if the cloth is a heavy sateen-like weave in a shut bedroom. Cotton percale stays drier against skin in the same room. A queen Tencel set from a mill that names lyocell content is $80–$180. Under $45 “Tencel blend” is often polyester with a lyocell face.
| Tencel lyocell | Cotton percale | Cotton sateen | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Hand | Silky, drapey | Crisp, matte | Silky, slight sheen |
| Moisture | High wick, can cling | Breathes through the grid | A bit warmer |
| Wrinkles | Fewer | More, and that is normal | Fewer than percale |
| Queen set | $80–$180 | $90–$200 long-staple | $90–$200 long-staple |
What to wash like
Cool to warm wash, low dryer or line dry. High heat can stiffen lyocell. No fabric softener — it coats filament the same way it coats cotton loops. If you want linen’s dry cool and do not mind crumple, skip both and buy linen. Tencel is the middle: smoother than cotton, less rustic than linen, not a miracle cooling knit.
Questions, answered
- Is Tencel the same as bamboo viscose?
- No. Lyocell is a closed-loop solvent process. Bamboo viscose is a different chemical route and often a different hand. Do not treat the words as synonyms.
- Do Tencel sheets pill?
- Less than short-staple cotton sateen. Cheap Tencel blends still pill at the foot of the bed.
- Hot sleeper — Tencel or percale?
- Percale first. Tencel if you hate percale’s crisp and the room is air-conditioned.
