Metal that lasts
Vermeil over Sterling: How to Care for It So the Gold Stays
US vermeil is at least 2.5 microns of gold over 925. Treat it like a thick plate, not like solid 14k. No silver dip. No pool. Dry the clasp.

You are caring for two metals
The face is gold. The jump rings, the back of a 15 mm hoop, and any breach are sterling. Sulfur will blacken whatever 925 is exposed from day one around a solder. That black is not “the vermeil tarnishing.” It is the core doing what 925 does.
US legal vermeil: 10k+ gold, 2.5 microns over sterling. Many good makers use 3 micron 18k. Fashion “vermeil” from a marketplace may be 0.5 micron and a lie. Ask for microns, then treat the number as the life expectancy.
The care list is mostly a do-not list
Do: dish soap, 30 seconds, baby toothbrush only on gold, dry, store in a dry bag. Do not: silver dip, foil bath, toothpaste, ultrasonic, chlorine, rubber-band storage. Gold-filled survives a shower more honestly because the gold is a bonded sheet, not a 2.5 micron film — that is the filled versus vermeil split. Vermeil earrings you remove at night last. Vermeil rings you sleep in become silver rings with a memory of gold.
- Earrings and pendants: vermeil is in its element
- Rings and cuffs: buy filled or solid
- Replate when you see 925, if the piece cost more than $120
- Replace when a $70 chain is more than 40% silver-looking
When the gold is gone
A jeweler can replate 2.5–3 microns if the 925 is sound, $50–$90 for a chain, more if they have to strip tarnish first. If the sterling is pitted from a pool, replating a crater does not make a new chain. At that point the $140 replacement is the care routine.
Questions, answered
- Can vermeil go in an ultrasonic?
- Skip it. Cavitation plus a 2.5 micron film is how you pay for a replate next month.
- Why is the back of my vermeil hoop silver already?
- Friction on hair, collars, and sleep. That surface was always the thinnest. Wear them as earrings you take off, or buy filled hoops.
- Is 5 micron vermeil worth it?
- Thicker is better, still a film. If a maker will sell 5 micron 18k over 925 on a pendant, that is a good vermeil. It is still not a 14k hoop.
