What GSM Towels to Buy

400–600 GSM for a bath towel. Under 400 is a gym towel. Over 700 is a spa prop that mildews on a small-bathroom hook.

What GSM Towels to Buy — still life for this Smart buying guide on Nonchallant

GSM is grams, not fluff in a photo

GSM is grams per square metre of the finished towel. It is the number that survives a photo shoot. Loops can look plush at 380 GSM in the shop and collapse by wash six. 500 GSM in long-staple Turkish or Pima cotton still has a pile in year five.

Construction still matters — that is the rest of how to buy towels that last — but GSM is the filter that stops you buying a gym towel for a bath.

Pick the band for the room, not the spa

A small bathroom with one bar wants 400–500 GSM or the towel stays wet at the fold and smells. A large bath with a heated rail can take 600. 700–900 GSM is a hotel photoshoot and a mildew project at home.

GSMObjectPrice, decent cotton
300–400Gym, kitchen, kids’ pool$8–$18
400–500Daily bath, small bathroom$30–$45
500–600Heavy bath / bath sheet$40–$80
700+Spa dense$60–$120, only if it can dry

Fibre still beats a bigger number

600 GSM short-staple is a heavy pill factory. 480 GSM extra-long-staple is the towel. Combed, ring-spun, long-staple or linen. Wash twice before first use, no fabric softener. White or a dark that hides makeup. Two bath towels per person, not twelve matching 800 GSM bricks.

Questions, answered

Is 600 GSM always better than 400?
No. 600 is plush and slow to dry. 400–500 is the better daily towel in a small bath.
Do linen towels use GSM the same way?
Yes as a density number, but linen is a flatter cloth, often 300–450 GSM, and dries faster. Do not expect cotton plush.
Why did my 600 GSM towel stay crunchy?
Fabric softener or detergent leftover in hard water. Wash hot-adjacent with extra rinse, no softener. Crunch is film, not GSM.
