What Socks to Wear with Loafers (Including None, on Purpose)

No-show in summer, fine rib in the colour of the trouser or the shoe in winter. Athletic crew with a penny loafer is how the outfit argues with itself.

What Socks to Wear with Loafers (Including None, on Purpose) — still life for this Wardrobe guide on Nonchallant

The shin test

Sit down. If a stripe of bare shin appears between trouser and sock, the sock is too short for that trouser. Loafers with cropped trousers can show ankle on purpose; loafers with full-length trousers should not show a tube of skin and then a white cuff.

No-show is a summer tactic, not a personality

Leather on bare skin is sweat, dye, and a blister. Use a no-show with a heel grip, or a loafer with a cloth lining, and let the shoes rest a day. Powder if you must. Going fully bare in a new pair is how heels bleed.

Colour is camouflage

Match the trouser to lengthen the leg, or match the shoe to hide the sock. Contrast (navy loafer, pale pink sock) is a look; it needs the rest of the outfit to be simple. Athletic stripes belong in trainers.

Questions, answered

Are sheer socks acceptable?
With a woman's loafer and a trouser or a midi, a nude or black sheer can work. With a chunky men's penny loafer, it looks like a mistake.
Can I wear loafers with shorts?
Yes with a no-show or a short rib in a dark colour, and a short that is not a gym inseam. White tube socks are a costume.
Wool or cotton?
Fine merino in cold months — odor and temperature. Thin cotton or silk-cotton in heat. Thick hiking wool will not fit the shoe and will wreck the line.
