What Width Belt for Trousers
Trousers: 30–32 mm (about 1.25 inches). Jeans: 35–38 mm (about 1.5 inches). 40 mm is a statement or a work belt. Measure the loops.

The loops are the spec sheet
Slide a ruler through a belt loop. That millimetre number is the maximum. A belt 2–3 mm narrower than the loop sits clean. A belt that stuffs the loop will bow the cloth and scrape the edge paint off in a month.
Trousers versus jeans versus “one belt”
A single 33–35 mm belt can split the difference for chinos and some jeans, and will look slightly casual on a suit. Two belts is the adult system: 30–32 mm dark calf for trousers, 35–38 mm for denim. Bridle or full-grain, not a 40 mm logo plaque.

Buckle width follows the strap
A 50 mm buckle on a 30 mm strap is a costume. The buckle should be within a few millimetres of strap width. Polished gilt for a suit; brushed or roller for jeans. Match leather colour to shoes, not to a brand’s seasonal tan.
Questions, answered
- Is 1.5 inches okay with dress pants?
- Usually too wide. 1.25 inches (32 mm) is the dress default. Measure the loops before you trust a US-inch label.
- Can I wear a thin braid belt in jeans?
- It will twist and look lost in 38 mm loops. Jeans want a strap with width and some thickness.
- Fabric belts?
- Fine on summer trousers if the loops are wide enough. They are not a leather-belt substitute for jeans that need structure.
