Litres and the laptop
18 litres is a laptop, charger, bottle, and a sweater. 22 litres adds lunch. 28 litres is when you start looking like travel. Clamshell or a wide U-zip beats a hiking top-loader you must unpack to find a badge.
Sleeve against the back, foam 8–10mm, opening that matches the chassis. 13-inch in a 16-inch hole needs a strap. 16-inch in a 13-inch hole does not go.
Weight, straps, weather
Nylon is the default commuter: 0.8–1.2kg empty, rain-sane. Leather backpacks at 1.8–2.4kg empty are car-to-desk objects. Packed over 4.5–5kg is a load problem.

On the body, in the room
Both straps on. Sternum strap optional and tucks. Take the pack off before you shake hands; put it on the floor or a hook, not on the meeting table. Rain: a 40g cover in the pocket, or a fabric that already sheds.
The same bag can be a personal item if packed it hits the sizer. Do not buy 22 litres and then stuff it to 30. The commuter pack is a daily, not a holiday.
Questions, answered
- Is 16 litres enough?
- For a 13-inch and a charger, sometimes. Lunch plus a bottle plus a sweater is why 18–22 litres exists.
- Can a commuter pack be leather?
- Yes if empty weight stays sane and you have a short walk. Most leather packs do not stay sane. Nylon is the commute; leather is the look.
- Do I need a hip belt?
- Not for 3kg. Yes if you regularly pack 6kg or walk 40 minutes. On a commuter, a belt should stow so it does not catch a chair.
