Designed around a metal box
The product page’s “20L” is not a sizer. A tall skinny 20L fails 40cm height. A short fat 20L fails 20cm depth. Look for packs that print 40 × 25 × 20 or 41 × 28 × 20 and then pack one test at home with a cardboard template.
Soft fabric compresses under a seat. A leather 20L box does not. Wheels steal the depth. The personal-item bag chapter is the same rule in tote form; this page is the backpack form.
What to put in it, and what not to
In flight: passport, medication, headphones, a layer, water after security, maybe a 13-inch. Clothes belong in the cabin bag. One small cube is enough; three cubes turn 20 litres into a brick that fails the sizer.

Two-bag travel without a suitcase
Personal-item backpack plus a 35–40 litre cabin pack is the Europe pattern. Do not buy two 30-litre packs and call one personal. The small one has to live under the seat on a full flight.
Harness: simple straps, no huge hip belt (it fights the seat). Sternum strap optional. Colour that does not scream in a hostel. Anti-theft mesh is still mostly marketing; a zipper against your back is the feature.
Questions, answered
- Can this be my only bag for a week?
- If you already live out of 20 litres, yes. Most people need the 35–40 litre cabin bag as well. Personal item is the reach-in bag.
- Will a 14-inch laptop fit?
- Measure packed. Some 22L US-sizer packs yes. Many 40 × 25 × 20 packs no. The laptop is the depth problem.
- Backpack or tote as a personal item?
- Backpack if you walk. Soft tote if you prefer a shoulder and the sizer still passes. Structured leather totes fail depth.
