Using a Camera Bag as an Everyday Bag
Dividers waste litres. A 10-litre camera sling becomes a 6-litre useful bag. Fine if you strip the foam and still have a zip.

Camera dividers turn 12 litres into 7 litres of rectangular slots. For a wallet and a bottle that is hostile. Pull them. Keep the padded base if the bag sits on pavement. The zipper and the sling strap are the useful parts.
If you carry a body plus a 13-inch, you want a small pack with a rear laptop sleeve and a front cube, not a cube against the back where the laptop should be. That is work-bag logic, not camera-catalogue logic.
When it works as a daily
Sling 6–8 litres, dividers out, phone and bottle, maybe a compact. Small backpack 12–14 litres with a 13-inch sleeve and one cube. Quiet nylon. Empty without cameras 0.6–1.0kg.

When to stop pretending
A 16-inch workstation does not belong in a camera sling. Buy a commuter backpack. A camera bag that only opens on the bottom is a theft design, not a commute design, unless you like unpacking on a café floor.
Weather: coated nylon camera bags often shed rain better than canvas. Still not a drybag. Lens-wise, if the glass is worth more than the bag, use the dividers that day and skip the groceries.

- Do I need a dedicated everyday bag plus a camera bag?
- If you shoot weekly, maybe one bag that converts. If you shoot yearly, a daily bag and a cheap insert in a tote is enough.
- Are camera straps good for commuting?
- Wide, grippy straps yes. Thin webbing on a 2kg body plus a laptop no. Same width rule as any bag: 3cm or more under load.
- Will airport staff hate a camera pack?
- They will ask it to open. Clamshell beats a puzzle of hidden zips when you are the queue.
