The bag should sit on the hip bone, not at the knee and not under the armpit. Total strap length of 110–130cm fits most people around 160–175cm tall.

Hip, not mid-thigh
A crossbody earns the name when the bag rests on the opposite hip and stays there at walking pace. If it slides to the lumbar spine, the strap is too long or too slick. If it sits on the ribcage, you bought a sling length. Coat season needs 5–8cm extra because the strap rides over a layer.
Measure what you already own: unclip or fully extend, measure end to end in centimetres, then put it on and note where the bag sits. That number is more useful than “one size.”
Length by height, with a grain of salt
Torso length matters more than height, but height is what listings give you. These are starting points for a bag body 18–24cm tall.

Width, hardware, and the belt-bag overlap
A 1.5cm chain on a 1.2kg bag is a saw. 2.5–4cm leather or webbing spreads the load. A pad helps only if the pad stays on the shoulder and does not slide to the collarbone. For a 1–3 litre pouch worn high, use the shorter lengths in the belt bag guide.
A crossbody versus tote decision is still a load decision. Length will not make a 4kg tote comfortable across the body. If the packed bag is over 2kg, you want a backpack or a wider shoulder strap, not another hole in the strap.
Questions, answered
- Is drop the same as strap length?
- No. Drop is the hanging distance from the top of the strap to the top of the bag. Total strap length is the whole loop. Listings mix them. Measure.
- Should a crossbody sit in front in a crowd?
- Yes. Shorten until you can put a hand on the zip. Fashion length at the thigh is how bags get opened behind you.
- Can I add a longer strap later?
- If the bag has 12–20mm rings or clips, yes — a $15–$40 webbing strap is a better upgrade than a new bag. Sewn-in chains are a commitment.
