A duffel is a cylinder. A weekender is a soft rectangle that wants to look like luggage. Both are 35–55 litres if they are honest about a weekend.

Cylinder versus box
A duffel loads from a long zip along the tube. Clothes roll well; shirts wrinkle; laptops are a bad idea unless there is a real sleeve. End handles plus a shoulder strap. 50 litres is a two-night bag or a gym-plus-overnight. 70 litres is a checked bag you are pretending is carry-on.
A weekender is a shorter, wider box with a top zip, often two handles that velcro, sometimes feet. It stands. It takes packing cubes in a grid. It still is not a backpack; one-shoulder 8kg is a weekend injury.

If the trip is cobblestones and trains, a 35–40 litre backpack from the Europe pack guide beats both. Duffel and weekender win for car trips and one-shoulder hotel-lobby walks.

Leather duffels and the weight tax
A full-grain duffel at 50 litres can empty-weigh 2.0–2.8kg. That is a beautiful object and a poor carry. Nylon 1000D at 1.0kg empty is the travel version. Leather weekenders at $280–$500 should still be under 1.8kg empty or they are hallway sculpture.
Wheels on a “duffel” make it a suitcase with a soft shell. Fine. Do not then also call it a personal item. The weekender as personal item test is a sizer, not a vibe.

- If packed it fits the cabin sizer (often 55 × 40 × 20–23cm) and the weight limit. Soft duffels can. Overstuffed 60L duffels cannot.
- Is a holdall a duffel?
- Yes, in British shops. Same cylinder. Same rules.
- Which is better for a two-night work trip?
- A weekender with a 13-inch sleeve and a shoe pocket, or a 30–35L backpack if you walk. A gym duffel with a suit in it is how suits die.
