Carry less, better
Garment Bag vs Folding a Suit
A hanging garment bag is 100–110cm of luggage that hates overhead bins. Folding into a 55cm carry-on is what most work trips actually are.

Hanging is a car accessory
A garment bag that zips around a hanging suit is kind to canvas and to structured shoulders. It is also 100–110cm long and 1.2–2.0kg before the suit. Overhead bins are 50–55cm in the short dimension. You will fold the garment bag, which is folding the suit with extra nylon in the way.
Tri-fold garment bags that collapse to ~55cm exist. They are folding systems with a hook. Buy one if you want the hook in the hotel and the sizer at the gate. $90–$180 in nylon. Leather garment bags at 2.5kg empty are for cars.
Folding is the flight
A wool suit forgives one clean fold. It does not forgive being rolled in a duffel. Use the carry-on method: jacket inside-out, one shoulder tucked into the other, trousers along, tissue at the fold if you have it. A folder of 40 × 55cm or a packing-folder 30 × 40cm keeps the crease where you put it.
| Method | Bag size | Empty weight | When it wins |
|---|---|---|---|
| Full hanging bag | 100–110cm | 1.2–2.0kg | Car, train with a hook |
| Tri-fold garment bag | ~55 × 40 × 10cm packed | 1.0–1.6kg | Cabin + hotel hook |
| Fold in carry-on | 55 × 40 × 20cm | Bag already counted | Most flights |
| Backpack with a suit | 20–25L plus care | 0.9–1.4kg bag | See wearing a pack with a suit |
The briefcase is not a garment bag
A leather briefcase holds a laptop and a file. It does not hold a jacket. Do not crush a blazer into 8cm of briefcase because the trip is “just overnight.”
If you will wear the suit on the plane, a slim backpack is possible — how to wear a backpack with a suit — and the garment bag stays home. Wrinkle is a fold problem and a fabric problem. Unconstructed jackets travel better than canvassed 3-roll-2 jackets. Believe the cloth.
Questions, answered
- Will a garment bag fit in the overhead?
- A tri-fold maybe. A 110cm hanging bag only if you fold it, which defeats hanging. Ask the crew and expect a no on full flights.
- Does folding ruin a suit?
- One fold in wool, hung on arrival, is normal life. A suit stuffed in a gym duffel for six hours is how shoulders die.
- Knit or canvassed for travel?
- Unconstructed or knit jackets travel. Heavily canvassed jackets want a hanger or a careful fold. Pack the one that matches the trip, not the one that matches the portrait.
