Carry less, better
How Heavy Is Too Heavy for a Work Bag?
Empty over 1.5kg is a fail if you walk. Packed over 4.5–5kg is a shoulder problem even with a wide strap. The laptop is already 1.3–2.2kg.

Empty weight is the spec brands hide
Leather totes with turnlocks often land at 1.8–2.6kg empty. That is a car bag. Nylon commuters at 0.8–1.2kg empty leave room for the machine. If the listing does not print kilograms, weigh it. A kitchen scale and a shop that allows it will tell you more than “lightweight” on a hangtag.
The laptop work-bag problem is the same numbers with a sleeve constraint.
Packed math for a normal Tuesday
Add the actual objects. Do not imagine a lighter charger.
| Item | Typical kg | Running total (example) |
|---|---|---|
| Empty nylon pack | 1.0 | 1.0 |
| 14-inch laptop | 1.5 | 2.5 |
| Charger + cables | 0.4 | 2.9 |
| 750ml water | 0.75 | 3.65 |
| Lunch box | 0.6 | 4.25 |
| Sweater / book | 0.5 | 4.75 |
One strap versus two
4.75kg on one 3cm tote strap is a trapezius day. The same 4.75kg on a commuter backpack is ordinary. A hip belt starts to matter above ~6kg or on long walks. There is no leather that makes 6kg on one shoulder polite.
A rough ceiling: keep packed under about 10% of body weight for a walk commute if you can. That is a guideline, not a medical rule. If your shoulder is already angry, the bag is too heavy today regardless of the table.
Questions, answered
- Is 2–3kg empty realistic in leather?
- It is common, and it is too heavy if you walk. Slim leather satchels can come in under 1.5kg. Bridle briefcases with brass often cannot.
- Does a padded strap fix weight?
- It fixes pressure. It does not remove kilograms. Pad plus width helps 3–4kg. It does not make 6kg on one shoulder a lifestyle.
- Should I leave the charger at the office?
- If you have a second brick, yes. 0.4kg every day is a bag choice you can skip. Water is the other easy cut: drink, refill, do not haul 750ml both ways without using it.
