Carry less, better

How to Choose Bag Strap Drop

Drop is the hanging gap from strap top to bag top. Totes want 25–30cm. Crossbodies want 50–60cm. Top-handles want 10–15cm. One number cannot do all three.

How to Choose Bag Strap Drop — still life for this Bags guide on Nonchallant

Three drops, three jobs

Top-handle (10–15cm): the bag is luggage for the hand. Fine for a 0.6kg clutch-adjacent satchel. Miserable for a 1.4kg empty leather tote plus a laptop — that is 4kg hanging from four fingers.

Shoulder (25–30cm): the tote or satchel sits on the shoulder without sliding to the elbow. This is the commute drop. A 22cm drop on a thick winter coat becomes a top-handle; allow 3–5cm extra if you wear coats most of the year.

Crossbody (50–60cm drop, or 110–130cm total strap): the bag sits on the opposite hip. Different geometry, explained with heights in the length guide.

Drop versus width versus weight

Drop does not fix a 1cm strap. A 28cm drop on a 4kg tote still grooves the trapezius. Width of 3–4cm, or a pad, is the other half of the decision. If packed weight regularly exceeds 4kg, drop is not the problem — the load is.

Adjustable is the feature

A work bag that only has one drop is a guess about your shoulder and your coat. Adjustable tabs, a sliding buckle, or a second set of rings cost the factory little and save you a return. The rest of the work-bag test still applies: sleeve, zip, empty weight.

Detachable straps let one bag do 28cm and 55cm. Buy the extra strap in 3cm webbing for $20–$45 rather than a second bag. Chains look finished and then saw. If you want chain, keep the packed load under 1.5kg.

Questions, answered

How do I measure drop in a shop?
Hold the bag by the handles as it will hang. Tape from the top of the handle down to the top edge of the body. Do not measure along the leather curve.
Why does my tote slide off my shoulder?
Drop is too long, strap is too skinny or too slick, or both. Shorten toward 25cm and look for 3cm width or a rubber underside.
Can one bag have two drops?
Yes: short handles plus a detachable longer strap. Use the short pair as a top-handle, the long strap as shoulder or crossbody. Confirm the rings are sewn through, not glued tabs.
