How to Fit a 16-Inch Laptop in a Backpack
A 16-inch chassis is about 35.6 × 24.8 × 1.7cm. You need a dedicated rear sleeve near 37 × 26cm, 20–25 litres, and empty weight under 1.4kg.

The sleeve is a box, not a slogan
Listings that say “fits 17 inch” and then give a 34cm-wide pocket are lying to the inch. Tape the chassis, then the sleeve opening. You want ~1.5–2cm of spare width and height plus foam. A rear sleeve against the back panel keeps the weight close; a front sleeve puts 2kg of machine away from your spine and into every door.
False bottoms: some packs have 3–5cm of empty pack below the sleeve so a drop does not hit the laptop. Useful. A sleeve that opens at the bottom with no zipper is how laptops leave bags on escalators.
Litres, weight, and why a tote fails
A 16-inch machine plus charger plus bottle is already most of a 18-litre bag. 20–25 litres is the honest commuter size; the commuter backpack range. Empty over 1.6kg plus a 2.1kg workstation is a 5kg+ walk before lunch.

Office looks, travel looks
A quiet 22-litre nylon pack with tuckable straps is an office object. A hiking pack with daisy chains is a weekend object in a lobby. The same tests as a work bag: zip, stand, sleeve. A 13-inch machine in this pack is fine if it cannot rattle; a 16-inch in a 13-inch tote is not — that is the opposite mistake from fitting a 13-inch in a tote.
Briefcases that claim 16-inch usually fight the zipper. Believe the centimetres.

- Only if the sleeve centimetres say so. “15-inch” and “16-inch” labels overlap and lie. Measure.
- Can I carry a 16-inch in a tote if I use a sleeve?
- A hard sleeve plus a very wide, zipping, structured tote can work. Most totes are not that tote. A backpack is the default.
- Does the laptop need to be against my back?
- Yes for a 2kg machine. Weight away from the back is a lever on the shoulders. Rear sleeve, not a front dump pocket.
