How to Spot Real Saffiano Leather
Real saffiano is hide with a pressed hatch and a coat. Fakes print the hatch on PU. The cut edge, the stamp, and the fold tell you.

Edge, fold, smell
A factory edge on real leather is painted or burnished over fibres. PU is a sandwich. If you can see the lining-side of a strap tab, look for hide, not white foam. Flex the handle: white fracture lines are film.
Smell is supporting evidence. Hide smells like hide. Solvent smell is coating or glue. It is not a verdict by itself; some real coated leather also smells like factory for weeks.
Pattern, stamp, hardware
The hatch on real saffiano is a press, so it has depth. Run a fingernail: you feel valleys. A print is flatter. Under a phone macro, fakes often show a tiled repeat. Compare to pebbled versus smooth — pebble can also be stamped; the fake tell is still the repeating plate and the PU edge.

Logos and the rest of the bag
A house saffiano fake fails on the same list as any fake: stitch wobble, light zip, wrong date-code format. Authentication looks at the object, not the PDF. Independent auth is still worth $30–$80 on a four-figure listing.
Real saffiano that is a corrected split can still be “real leather” and still be a low grade. You can have authentic-house, low-grade hide. You can have no-name top-grain saffiano that is a better daily. The finish is not a moral category.

- Yes. That is why listings work. You need the edge, the fold, and the weight in hand, or a trusted authenticator.
- Does real saffiano peel?
- The coat can wear at hard folds after years, especially on splits. Sheet-peeling in months is PU or a bad coat.
- Is Prada the only real saffiano?
- No. They popularised a finish. Other tanneries press similar hatches. The logo is branding. The hide is the hide.
