Carry less, better

How to Store Leather Bags with Stuffing

Fill to about two-thirds so the sides stand and the seams do not strain. Tissue or a pillowcase, not ink-heavy newspaper. Dust bag, shelf, no hook.

How to Store Leather Bags with Stuffing — still life for this Bags guide on Nonchallant

How full is full enough

Structured box totes want enough stuffing that the walls do not cave, not so much that the zip strains. Slouch wants less — you are storing a soft shape, not inflating a balloon. Hobos: support the crescent, do not force a box. If the bag is structured versus slouchy, match the stuffing to the cut.

Handles: rest them, do not let a 1.5kg tote hang from a hook for winter. Handle stuffing (a thin roll of tissue in a hollow handle) is optional and helps vachetta keep a round.

What to stuff with

Acid-free tissue is the luxury default. A clean cotton pillowcase stuffed with more cotton is the household default. Bubble wrap can mark coated leather if it sits for months; if you use it, put cloth between plastic and hide.

  • Yes: acid-free tissue, cotton, felt shapers ($12–$40)
  • Yes if wrapped: newspaper, only inside a cloth barrier
  • No: plastic bags as the only layer, damp clothes, scented silica dumped on vachetta
  • No: hanging a leather tote by its straps as “storage”

Dust bags, climate, neighbours

Cotton dust bag on, plastic off. Pale vachetta and dark denim or stained wood should not share a shelf — vachetta takes dye and oil. Patent can stick to other patent; keep them apart.

Stuffing is not a substitute for a base board in a work bag you use every day. It is for the weeks the bag sits. If you rotate two bags, empty and restuff on Sunday so grit does not store with the leather.

Questions, answered

Can I use packing paper from parcels?
If it is clean and not dyed, yes, inside a pillowcase. Ink and recycled speckles can transfer onto pale lining.
Should I stuff a bag I use every day?
Overnight, a light stuff helps a structured tote. A full museum stuff is for seasonal storage.
Do I condition before stuffing?
A light condition, 24 hours to absorb, then stuff. Do not trap wet cream in a dust bag.
