Match the interior to the laptop in centimetres. 13-inch wants about 36 × 28 × 8cm. 14-inch about 38 × 30 × 9cm. 16-inch usually wants a backpack.

Interior centimetres, not “fits most laptops”
The same caution as fitting a 13-inch in a tote: inches on the laptop box are a screen diagonal. Tape the chassis. Add a sleeve’s thickness. If the briefcase zipper has to climb the corner of the machine, the case is too small.
A padded sleeve inside the briefcase is not optional if you set it down. Unpadded leather against a table is a scratch on the lid, then a crack in a corner.
Sizes that actually map to machines
Gussets (expandable sides) are for paper, not for forcing a 16-inch. Once expanded, the case does not stand as well and the handle drop changes.

Handle, strap, office
Top-handle drop of 8–12cm is a briefcase. A shoulder strap of 3cm with 25–30cm drop is the commute add-on. Without it, 4kg in the fingers is a short walk only. The rest of the work-bag test still applies: close, stand, feet help.
Hard-sided boxes are attaches — next page. Soft briefcases that collapse are totes. Buy the structure you need, not the word on the listing.
Questions, answered
- Can a slim briefcase take a charger brick?
- Yes if there is a pocket that is not on the laptop face. A 3cm-deep slim case with a 90W brick stacked on the lid is how lids bow.
- Is 40cm wide too big?
- For a 13-inch, yes — the machine will rattle and the case will look empty. For files plus a 14-inch, 38–42cm can be right. Measure the contents.
- Leather briefcase on a bike?
- On a rack, maybe. Over one shoulder, no. The case and the collarbone both lose.
