Weight is the first spec
A 1.4kg laptop in a 2.2kg leather tote is a 3.6kg empty-looking commute before the charger and the bottle. Nylon at 0.9kg empty keeps the same load nearer 3kg. If packed weight is heading past 4.5kg, read how heavy is too heavy and change the bag, not your physiotherapy later.

Nylon vs leather, as objects
Nylon wants a quiet colour (black, navy, grey) to look like work. Leather wants care: a wipe, not a kitchen cloth, and no radiator.

Hybrids and the fake middle
Leather-trim nylon is the honest hybrid: nylon body, leather handles, 1.0–1.4kg. All-PU “vegan leather” work totes are the dishonest middle: they photograph as hide and peel as film. If you want no animal product, buy nylon or a known fabric, not a $85 coating.
Saffiano-coated leather is a third thing — scratch-resistant, heavier, less thirsty. It is still leather under a press, not nylon, and it still weighs like leather.
Questions, answered
- Is leather more professional than nylon?
- In some rooms, yes. In most open offices, a quiet nylon backpack is normal. A peeling PU tote is less professional than nylon.
- Will nylon last ten years?
- The cloth will. The zipper and the stitch at the handle might not. A replaceable #8 or #10 zipper and bartacks at stress points are the tells. $55 marketplace nylon often has neither.
- Can I take a leather work bag in rain?
- Short rain, wipe it. Long rain, a cover or a nylon bag. Finished calf hates soaking. Vachetta handles stain.
