A 30–60g cover keeps a normal pack honest in rain. A waterproof bag is welded TPU or drybag cloth. Leather wants a cover, not a dunk.

Resistant, covered, waterproof
Most nylon commuters are water-resistant: rain beads for a while, seams leak eventually. A cover extends that. Waterproof means welded or taped seams and an opening designed to seal. The words on listings lie; look at seam photos.
Leather versus nylon in rain is unfair to hide. Finished calf wants a wipe. Vachetta wants you to have stayed inside. A cover over a leather tote looks odd and still helps.

A commuter backpack plus a cover in the pocket is the usual city system. A TPU roll-top is the ferry system.

Waxed canvas and “waterproof zips”
Waxed canvas sheds light rain and is not a drybag. PU-coated zips resist rain along the teeth and still leak at the garage. Neither replaces rolling a drybag three times.
Canvas versus nylon in a storm is nylon, plus a cover if the seams are ordinary. Do not put a 16-inch workstation in an open tote because the listing said water-resistant.

- Do I need a cover if the pack is already nylon?
- For 10 minutes of rain, maybe not. For an hour of rain with a laptop inside, yes, or a pack with taped seams and a real flap.
- Are drybags acceptable as work bags?
- On a bike in February, function wins. In a client lobby, a quiet nylon pack plus a cover wins. You can own both.
- Will a cover fit any bag?
- Covers are sized in litres (e.g. 20–40L). Too small and it pulls off. Too big and it sails. Match the pack volume.
