Carry less, better

Sling Bag vs Crossbody

A sling is a one-strap backpack you swing to the chest. A crossbody is a bag on a long strap at the hip. Both leave a hand free. They do not hold the same load.

Sling Bag vs Crossbody — still life for this Bags guide on Nonchallant

One strap, two geometries

A sling sits on the back, strap over one shoulder, and rotates forward. The panel against you is backpack-shaped. 5 litres is a jacket-optional day. 8 litres starts to feel like a lopsided backpack.

A crossbody hangs at the hip on a strap that does not care about your back. The crossbody versus tote load rule still applies: 1–2kg honest. Past that, the strap is a 2cm saw.

Sling vs crossbody

A camera bag as an everyday bag is often a sling with dividers. Fine if you remove the cubes when you are not carrying glass.

How to wear each without a costume

Sling: strap across the chest, bag on the back until you need it. Wearing it on the chest all day in an office looks tactical. Crossbody: hip, not mid-thigh, as in the length guide. Belt-bag conversion is the high-chest version of the same idea.

Leather slings over 0.8kg empty are jewellery. Nylon slings at 0.35kg are the daily. Skip molle webbing unless your day is actually kit.

Questions, answered

Can a sling replace a commuter backpack?
Not with a 14-inch laptop and a lunch. It replaces a jacket pocket and a small crossbody.
Which is better for travel?
Sling or a belt bag on the chest in crowds. Crossbody on the hip is easier to pick. Neither is your only bag for a week.
Is a crescent bag a sling?
Usually it is a crossbody crescent (hobo-adjacent). A sling has a backpack-shaped panel and a sports-strap geometry.
