Carry less, better
What Size Toiletry Bag Do You Need?
Weekend: 1–2 litres. Week: about 3 litres. The security liquids bag is a separate 1-litre clear pouch. Do not make the dopp do both badly.

Litres follow nights, not gender
One night: toothpaste, deodorant, medication, toothbrush — 1 litre. Five nights with full-size bottles: you packed a bathroom. Decant to 50–100ml. A hanging kit with two hooks uses a hotel rail so the 3 litres is not on a wet sink.
Leather dopps look like objects and weigh 0.3–0.6kg empty. Nylon 0.1–0.2kg is the travel version. Leather is a home-to-gym kit.
The 1-litre liquids rule is not the dopp size
Security wants a single transparent 1-litre bag of liquids, each container 100ml or under (rules vary; check the airport). That bag goes in a tray. Your toiletry bag can be larger and hold the dry tools. Mixing them means unpacking 3 litres in the queue.
| Trip | Toiletry volume | Notes |
|---|---|---|
| Overnight | 1–1.5L | One pouch, maybe skip hanging |
| Weekend | 1.5–2L | Hanging helps small bathrooms |
| Week | 2.5–3.5L | Decant; do not pack full-size |
| Security liquids | 1L clear, separate | Not a substitute dopp |
Where it lives in the bag
In the personal item or the top of a clamshell, because spills and because morning. A weekender used as a personal item already fights underseat centimetres — a 4-litre rigid train case can be the reason you fail the sizer. Soft wins.
Waterproof lining (TPU) beats “water resistant” canvas if anything leaks. A $22 nylon hanging kit with a TPU trough is more rational than a $90 unlined canvas that stains at the first conditioner bottle.
Questions, answered
- Is a 5-litre toiletry bag useful?
- For a family kit or a long car trip. For one person on a plane it is how you fail a sizer and spill on shirts.
- Hanging or box?
- Hanging in hotels with a rail or a hook. Box if you live out of a train case at a sink with space. Planes and small bathrooms: hanging.
- Can the liquids bag be my only toiletry?
- For a true overnight, yes. Razors, floss, and pills still want a zip so they do not wander. A 1-litre clear plus a tiny dry pouch is a system.
