What to Wear to a Baptism
Church rules first. Pastel is a photograph habit, not a liturgy. Covered shoulders, quiet shoes, no logos.

The room is a church even when the lunch is a garden
If the rite is in a sanctuary, follow that room: shoulders covered, hem at the knee when you sit, matte cloth, quiet soles. A garden lunch afterward can drop a notch — take the jacket off, not the sense. A mosque or an Orthodox church may want a scarf; carry one.

Pastel is not a sacrament
Soft blue, cream, butter, and sage photograph next to a white christening gown. They are not mandatory. Navy and gray are correct. Avoid a full white column that competes with the baby. Godparents often dress a step up; guests should not outdress them.
Photos, babies, and a bag that is not a suitcase
You may hold a child. Nothing that snags, no sharp jewelry, no dry-clean-only silk you will guard. A $40–$90 cotton or linen-blend dress, or chinos and an oxford, with a cardigan. Small bag. Phones on silent before you sit.
Questions, answered
- Can I wear black?
- A black dress in daytime fabric is fine. A funeral column with a veil is the wrong rite. Soften it with a cream cardigan or a colored shoe.
- Do men need a tie?
- In a Catholic or Orthodox sanctuary, a tie looks finished. In a casual Protestant church, a collared shirt is enough. Bring the tie.
- What if I am a godparent?
- One notch above the other guests. Pressed, covered, photographable. You will be in the album forever.
