Optional is not permission to underdress
The word ‘optional’ is there so men without a tux are not barred. It is not there so you can wear the interview suit with a knit polo. A dark two-button worsted, 9–11 oz, peak or notched lapel, white poplin, dark silk tie. Black calf oxfords, not brown derbies, not loafers with no socks.
A tuxedo still wins the photographs. Peak lapel, satin or grosgrain, black bow tie, no novelty. Peak-lapel rentals that fit the shoulder beat a $90 shiny ‘tux’ with glued braid.
| Tuxedo | Dark suit (accepted) | Not this card | |
|---|---|---|---|
| Jacket | Dinner jacket, satin/grosgrain lapel | Navy or charcoal worsted | Tan, seersucker, loud check |
| Neck | Black bow tie | Dark long tie | Open collar, novelty print |
| Shoes | Patent or highly polished black calf | Polished black oxford | Brown, white sole, sneaker |
| Women | Floor gown or dressed midi, fine fabric | Same, slightly simpler | Sundress, white, mini |
Women: long is safer, midi has to work harder
Floor-length in crepe, chiffon, velvet, or a serious satin is the easy yes. A midi has to be fabric-forward — silk, wool crepe, embroidered — and not a $45 viscose wrap that reads as office drinks. No white, ivory, or pale champagne. Black is fine after 6pm in a cocktail or evening cloth.
When a dark suit actually loses
If the couple is famous for formality, if the invitation is engraved, or if you are in the wedding party, rent the tux. A navy suit in a room of dinner jackets photographs as the man who did not read the card. The suit is the honest backup, not the stylish choice.
Questions, answered
- Can I wear a navy tuxedo?
- Midnight navy dinner jackets exist and look finished in the right cloth. Royal blue polyester is a costume. When in doubt, black.
- Are dark brown shoes acceptable?
- Not for this code. Black calf. Brown is cocktail-or-below.
- Is a jumpsuit okay?
- A tailored, floor-length or very dressed jumpsuit in crepe or silk, yes. A utility jumpsuit, no.
