What to Wear to a Cocktail-Attire Wedding (Cocktail Is Not a Mini)

Length is the whole argument

Cocktail length is knee to mid-calf. A mini that rides up on the dance floor is a different dress code, usually ‘club.’ A floor gown is black tie and can look overdressed at 4pm in a hotel ballroom — though a simple long column in crepe often passes. When you sit, the hem should still look like a decision.

Fabric does the rest. Wool crepe, silk, a lined cotton sateen. Viscose that goes transparent in flash photography is how you become a cautionary tale in the group chat.

Men: the tie is doing more than you think

In New York, Chicago, London, and most hotel ballrooms, a dark suit without a tie at a cocktail wedding looks unfinished. In Los Angeles and some backyard 5pm ceremonies, an open collar under a navy jacket can pass if the rest is sharp. Bring the tie. Putting it on in the car is free.

The suit can be the same navy or charcoal you wear to work if the cloth is matte and the fit is not office-boxy. A $250 tropical-wool suit beats a $90 shiny one.

Shoes you can dance in, still cocktail

A 1.5–2.5 inch block heel, a leather oxford, a polished loafer. Not a new 4-inch stiletto. Not a fashion sneaker unless the couple is that couple and you have seen the groomsmen’s plan. Rubber taps, $10, from a cobbler.
