What to Wear to a Destination Wedding Without Arriving Wrinkled
Heat, a suitcase, and a ceremony fabric that still looks like clothes at 4pm. Pack for the iron you will not get.

Wrinkle is a fabric choice, not a hotel failing
Linen wrinkles and that is the cloth working — pack it rolled, hang it in a steamy bathroom, stop fussing. Knit midis and tropical wool recover. Silk charmeuse, cheap viscose, and anything with a sharp pleat will not. If the hotel iron is a rumor, you packed wrong.
A garment bag in the $40–$90 range for the one ceremony piece, or wear a rumple-proof knit on the plane and keep the dress in the checked bag only if you trust the airline, which you should not for the only nice thing you brought.
- Ceremony: linen, tropical wool, knit midi, cotton voile — $80–$250

Tropical 3pm is humidity. Unlined viscose clings. A lined cotton or linen midi, or men’s linen trousers with an unstructured jacket you remove before vows, is the honest kit. Polyester ‘linen-look’ shines and then smells. If the ceremony is in an air-conditioned chapel, add the wrap; stone churches go cold.
The rest of the long weekend
Welcome drinks are not the wedding. Beach day is not the wedding. Pack one sharper dinner look and otherwise repeat a capsule: two bottoms, three tops, the swim you actually use. Do not bring five maybes in a 50-litre bag and then iron in a panic at 3pm.
Questions, answered
- Can I wear the ceremony dress twice?
- To welcome drinks, no. To a separate dinner two nights later in a different restaurant, sometimes, if you change jewelry and shoes. The couple will notice a repeat on consecutive nights.
- Is a tuxedo required at a destination black-tie?
- If they printed black tie, yes — and rent at the destination only if you have already confirmed fit. A navy tropical suit is black-tie optional, not black tie.
- What about bugs and sun?
- Covered shoulders at dusk, a real sunscreen that does not stain silk, closed shoes on grass at night. A $12 dark lens is not UV protection.
