You will lift weight in leather shoes on grass or marble. A jacket that buttons. Soles that grip. Nothing in your hands but the casket.

Grip, then cloth
A casket is awkward weight on a slope, a step, or wet turf. Leather soles without rubber are ice. Wear an oxford or derby you have already walked in, with a stacked leather or rubber-dot sole, or add a tap the day before. Chelsea boots in plain black leather can work if they are clean and you can feel the ground. No suede. No new shoe.

The jacket has to work like equipment
Button it. You will be in photographs from the side. A dark suit with room through the shoulder and the sleeve is more important than a knife-sharp fashion cut you cannot raise your arms in. Take the coat off before you lift; a wet wool overcoat on top of a casket handle is how people slip.
In heat, tropical wool still looks like a suit. In summer funerals, you still wear the jacket for the carry. Shirtsleeves are for the car.
Before and after the carry
Empty the pockets so nothing falls on the aisle. A program goes in a pew, not in a hand. After the graveside, you may be muddy — that is the job. Do not wear the only pale silk dress you own if you are also a pallbearer; trousers or a dark suit skirt with a jacket you can move in.
If you cannot lift, say so before the day. Honorary pallbearers walk; working pallbearers lift. The clothes are the same; the shoes matter more if you lift.

- Do I have to wear a black suit?
- Navy or charcoal is correct in most US services. Wear black if the family asked, or if you already own a matte black suit that fits you better.
- Are gloves required?
- Only if the funeral home or the tradition provides them. Do not buy costume gloves. Bare clean hands are fine.
- Can I wear a dress as a pallbearer?
- If you can lift in it, the hem stays down on stairs, and you have a jacket. A pencil that only walks is a problem. Trousers are easier.
