Breathable dark is the brief
Jet black viscose and polyester throw a sheen in daylight and then trap heat. A navy tropical-wool suit ($250–$500) or a charcoal cotton-linen or crepe dress ($90–$220) is the summer uniform. Matte. Opaque. Knee-length or longer. Sleeves or a light jacket for the service.

Graveside grass in July
Same shoe problem as any outdoor service: stilettos punch sod. Add heat. Stand in the shade if you can. A dark straw or felt hat that comes off indoors. Water in the car, not a neon bottle in the procession.
The jacket comes on for the room
Drive in shirtsleeves. Put the jacket on in the parking lot. Take it off after if the family is doing a long graveside. Pallbearers do not get to skip the jacket — see pallbearer. Quiet is still the whole job.
Questions, answered
- Can I wear a short-sleeve shirt?
- Under a jacket, yes. As the only layer in a sanctuary, it looks unfinished. Graveside after, sometimes.
- Is linen too rumpled for a funeral?
- A dark linen-blend that is pressed that morning is acceptable in heat. A crushed pale linen suit is not.
- Are sandals ever okay?
- Almost never. Closed leather. If you cannot wear a closed shoe for medical reasons, a dark, finished sandal with a back strap, and you already know you are the exception.
