What to Wear to a Garden Party
Grass eats stilettos. Hats are optional. Linen and cotton, not a ballroom gown, unless the card said otherwise.

Grass is the floor
A stiletto heel is a tent peg. The useful garden shoes are few: a wedge (cork or crepe), a 1.5–2 inch block with a wide footprint, a leather loafer, a sandal with a strap and a stacked heel. Pack a fold-flat if you guessed wrong. Men: a leather loafer or an oxford with a rubber or combination sole, not a smooth leather dress shoe that slides on wet grass.

Hats are optional, not a personality
A garden party in the American suburbs does not require a wide brim. A British-coded invite or a derby-adjacent lunch might. If you wear a hat, it needs a fit or a pin; otherwise you will hold it during the toast. Sunglasses come off for conversation and speeches.
Cloth that moves in air
Linen, cotton voile, seersucker, a lined midi in crepe. $80–$220. Prints are welcome. A trailing chiffon hem will pick up grass stain and then dew. Men: linen or cotton-linen trousers, an unstructured jacket you take off, a collared shirt. A full worsted suit in July on a lawn is a heat injury.

- A cocktail midi in cotton or linen is the top of the range. A sequin cocktail belongs indoors at night.
- Can men wear shorts?
- Only if the invite is explicitly casual and you have seen the host in shorts at similar events. Tailored, not cargo. Trousers are safer.
