Sequins are a garnish
A sequin skirt or a top, $80–$200, over something matte is enough glitter for most rooms. A full sequin column sheds on other people’s coats and on the canapés. Cheap plastic sequins look like they came off a costume. If you wear sparkle, pick one garment and let navy, black, or charcoal do the rest.
Navy tropical wool or crepe at night reads as intentional, not as you refused to celebrate. A silk shirt in ivory or jewel under a dark jacket is the non-sequin path.

Midnight is outdoors even when the party is not

You will stand. A 2 inch block heel or a leather boot you have danced in. Sequined pumps with a smooth sole are how NYE ends in a bathroom with a plaster. Men: polished leather, not a fashion sneaker unless the room is already in them.

- Is a tuxedo too much?
- Only if the invite is black tie or you are going to a room that asked for it. A dark suit is the default. A tux at a house party looks like you got lost.
- Can I wear black?
- Yes. Add a texture or an earring so it does not read as a wake.
- What about a sparkly hair thing?
- One small clip is fine. A full tiara is a different party, usually someone else’s.
