What to Wear to a Video Interview
The camera crops at mid-chest. Light behind you is the enemy. Wear the trousers anyway.

From the chest up is not an excuse
The frame is shoulders, neck, face. A solid mid-blue oxford or a fine merino crew holds. Houndstooth and tight checks shimmer. A white shirt against a white wall erases you; a navy shirt against a navy wall does the same. Contrast with the background.
A blazer in navy or charcoal, $120–$280, if finance, law, consulting, or a corporate panel. Off if the team is in hoodies and you already know. The jacket has to fit the shoulder on camera; a tent is louder on video than in a lobby.

Light is clothing
Face a window. Do not sit with a window behind you unless you like being a silhouette. A $20–$40 lamp at 45 degrees is enough. Test the laptop camera at the same hour as the call. Glasses: antireflective if you have them; new frames are a fidget.
Audio, fidgets, and the standing surprise
A noisy necklace against a mic, a chair that squeaks, a silk blouse that rustles every time you move. Cotton poplin and merino are quiet. Wear the full outfit. Interviewers ask you to walk to a whiteboard more often than the internet admits.

- Do I need a tie on Zoom?
- If the role is a tie role (finance, law, some consulting), yes. Otherwise a collar is enough. Ask the recruiter.
- Can I wear a patterned shirt?
- A wide stripe or a large check can work. Micro-checks and fine herringbone shimmer. Solid is safer.
- What about makeup?
- If you wear it, the five-minute version. Webcams add orange and erase contour you spent twenty minutes on. Powder the shine.
