What to Wear to a Wake or Visitation

Quieter than the funeral, shorter, often a parlor with a receiving line. Dark, matte, no jingle.

What to Wear to a Wake or Visitation — still life for this Occasions guide on Nonchallant

Quieter than the funeral, not sloppier

The room is carpet, lamps, and a receiving line. People will look at your face, then your shoes. Navy or charcoal trousers, a collared shirt, a jacket if you have one that fits. A knee-length or longer dress in crepe or wool, sleeves or a cardigan. Skip the fashion black with a slit. Skip logos.

The receiving line is the outfit’s job

You will hug, shake hands, and stand. Nothing that snags. Nothing that jingles when you lean in. A $90–$220 charcoal dress or the navy suit you already own. If you are going from work, take off the lanyard and the badge.

If you cannot attend the funeral

The visitation is often the only chance. Dress as if it were the service. Do not treat it as a drop-in in gym clothes because the hours are listed as a range. Sign the book. Keep the visit short if the family is tired.

Questions, answered

Can I come from the office in what I had on?
If it is already navy or charcoal and quiet, yes. If it is a logo polo, change. A blazer in the car solves most of this.
Is it rude to wear color?
A muted burgundy scarf or a forest sweater is fine at most US visitations. Bright florals and white sneakers are not.
What about a celebration-of-life visitation in a garden?
Still muted. Follow any color note from the family. The default remains dark and matte.
