Black tie, cocktail, and festive mean different garments, not different moods. White is out. The floor you dance on decides the shoe.

Decode the dress code before you spend
The invite line is a specification. “Black tie” is a dinner jacket with satin lapels, black trousers, a black bow tie, and patent or highly polished oxfords — or a floor-length gown. A navy business suit with a long tie is black-tie optional at best, and it photographs as the man who did not read the card. “Black tie optional” means tuxedos in the room; a dark suit is allowed, a tan suit is not.
Cocktail is the most abused word on invites. It means a dress that is not floor-length and not a sundress: crepe, silk, or a wool suit, cocktail hour length, often $120–$350 for something you will wear again. Festive is the code for “we want color and we will not be grim.” Garden, beach, and casual each have their own fabric, covered in the table — and a beach ceremony has its own guide.

White, ivory, cream, and the pale-gold loophole
The ban is not only literal white. Ivory, champagne, sand, blush-that-reads-white, and a cream suit with a white shirt will all come up in the album as a second bride. A white collar on a navy dress is fine. A white floral on a navy ground is fine if the white is not the majority. A column of pale champagne satin is not.
If the couple has asked for white (some cultural weddings, some city hall elopements with a later party), follow that note and ignore this paragraph. Otherwise treat pale cloth the way you treat a funeral: the front row has a claim on it, and you do not. Satin in ivory is the highest-risk fabric in the room because it photographs as bridal even at cocktail length.
Venue and month change the fabric, not just the color
A stone church in January wants 9–12 oz wool, crepe, or a lined midi, and a wrap you can sit on. A barn in October can take boots, a wool dress, and texture. A rooftop in July wants tropical wool (7–8 oz), linen, or cotton voile — not a black tuxedo-cloth suit that spots with sweat before vows. Humidity plus polyester is how guests shine in every group photo.
Outdoor lawns punish stilettos the same way a graveside does. Ask what the ground is. If nobody knows, pack a second pair of flats in the bag you actually carry and wear a block heel you can stand in through a 20-minute ceremony. City hall at noon on a Tuesday is cocktail-adjacent at most: a suit or a midi, not a ballgown.
Shoes you can dance in for three hours
The photos last 40 minutes. The dancing lasts until the DJ plays the last song. A brand-new 4-inch stiletto with a smooth leather sole is a blister machine. Wear a 1.5–2.5 inch block heel you have already walked a mile in, or a leather oxford with a rubber or combination sole. A $20 cobbler rubber tap on a dress shoe is the cheapest alteration at the wedding.
Men: break in the dress shoes a week out, not in the Uber. If the code is cocktail and the floor is parquet, a dark calf oxford beats a suede loafer that will be gray by dessert. Keep a band-aid in the jacket pocket. You are a guest; comfort is not a personality, it is how you stay until cake.

- Can I wear black to a wedding?
- Yes in most US and UK rooms, in a cocktail or evening fabric — crepe, wool, silk — not a funeral matte column. Skip black if the couple asked for color, or if the wedding is a daytime garden in July.
- What does “festive” actually mean?
- Color and one textured garment or accessory. Jewel tones, a printed silk, velvet in winter, a serious pocket square. It does not mean a joke tie, a sequin bodycon, or a Santa sweater.
- Is a navy suit enough for black tie optional?
- A dark worsted navy or charcoal suit with a white shirt and a conservative tie is accepted. A tuxedo is still the better reading of the card. Khaki, an open collar, and brown suede loafers are not.
